From heartache comes a miracle...

Many of you know Thanksgiving evening Equine Outreach lost their beautiful Lacey who came to them from a surrender that was helped along with law enforcement.
Lacey was blind, pregnant and scared.. It took volunteers a while to gain her trust and let them remove the tangles from her mane.. But she soon showed her sweet, calm and compassionate side…
Two months ago she gave birth to a beautiful colt “Skylar”
Now this story has so much to it that it will need to be shared.. This is part of why this story is so amazing…..

A woman and her daughter came to visit Equine Outreach on an open house, just for fun to see if they could volunteer and help. They took one look at Lacey and said “That is my daughters horse”.. The truly sad part is that they had adopted Lacey out to what they thought a forever loving home where she ended up was not the case and that is how she came to Equine Outreach. Lacey had belonged to this womans other daughter who had passed away…..Because they could not take her the woman was soon visiting Lacey every day.. Taking her for walks and even riding her in the field….

Then along comes Skylar – WILD, curious, and STRONG.. Standing within 5 minutes of his birth. It quickly became apparent that HE was now Lacey’s protector and even though he was tiny was so attentive to his mother and instantly knew she was “special”…

Thanksgiving evening Equine Outreach Lost Lacey. She developed colic that increased quickly, the vet was called out but it was too late.. Internally she was suffering.. She was humanely euthanized… Agonizing calls and cries from Skyler searching for his “special” Mom could not reach her where she was now.. Running in the green pastures with all the others that had crossed before her.
The Volunteers frantic to console Skylar and have a “plan” remembered a mare that had come in this summer as an owner surrender.. Penny had been in a roll over trailer accident cracking her rib cage.. Although her accident was horrific, she healed and will even load in a trailer without trouble!.. Now the interesting thing about Penny is that although she had not had a foal for four years she still continued to lactate off and on..IT was worth a shot….

So, over the week-end Penny was placed with Skylar a barrier between them at first.. Penny was somewhat standoffish yet also interested at the same time.. During that first day Skylar was wanting to be with Penny and Penny was showing more and more interest. By the third day the volunteers released Penny and SKylar together in the arena.. Penny a true mom!.. She was attentive, yet also showed gentle discipline when needed… And then a miracle……
By the end of the Fifth day Penny allowed baby Skyler to nurse.

Lacey was a great loss to Equine Outreach.. Yet out of all the sadness and tragedy a miracle.. Penny was brought to the rescue and now has the most wonderful purpose.. Not taking over Lacey’s position as Skylar’s Mom, but allowing Lacey to have peace and know that her baby will be cared for and that he will never suffer nor be neglected in life.
